MY STORY
As I sit and write this, I ask myself where do I start with "My story". I'd a very happy childhood until secondary school. There as a young gay man in the closet my self confidence and my happiness were at rock bottom. I left school and went to University, the reality of being free of the old resulted in me doing very little college work and I dropped out in first year. I began working in pubs and retail and eventually got an office job.
In 2007 the global recession had a huge impact on Ireland. I lost my job and decided to travel to Australia and Asia for a year. While travelling I recognised I needed to come home and get a degree. I knew I wanted to help people. I was nervous I'd "fail" again in college and fearing judgement, I decided to take a one year Certificate in Applied Psychology and Social Science in Cork College of Commerce. There I excelled and found my confidence to study further. I moved to University College Cork and completed my Bachelor of Social Work.
In University I had started working in Public Relations and Social Media for a variety of companies and politicians. After University I started working for myself full time and loved it. I found working for myself amazing but like so many self employed people, I was working 12 hour days and eventually my motivation levels dropped.
I then worked in Business Development and Events, It wasn't my calling but it paid my bills. Covid-19 struck in 2020 and I lost my job. They say things come in 3's and within 6 weeks .I'd broken up from a short term relationship, my landlord decided to sell the house I was renting and I lost my job. I hit rock bottom and considered ending it all. I had a fantastic doctor and decided to attend therapy. Therapy was certainly one of the best things, I've ever done in my life.
I got the opportunity to look back at everything in my life that still bothered me and discuss it, in a non judgemental environment. At that time I was extremely anxious about the future and depressed about my past. I also began attending acupuncture and reiki. I found both of them so useful to help clear my mind, bring some clarity and just lift my mood.
During that time I binge-read self-development books, podcasts and Youtube videos. It was then I attended Life Coaching. I really liked the structure of accountability and it's future rather than past focus. In time, I dusted myself off. Got back out dating with a very new perspective. I got a new job and I'd a roof over my head.
One of the goals I set for myself after going to Life Coaching, was to study Life Coaching and Reiki. In January 2022 I began that journey. I studied my Reiki Practitioner course with Geraldine Walsh in the Dublin Wellness Centre and successfully completed my Diploma in Life Coaching with the Irish Life Coach Institute. My passion for wellness continues. I'm passionate about self-care and I've created my own self-care regime of yoga, walking, meditation and growing and harvesting my own chamomile tea.
